Brief Information Augusta Ada King, Countess of Lovelace, was an English mathematician and writer. She is known for her work on Charles Babbage's proposed mechanical general-purpose computer, the Analytical Engine. Lovelace's notes on the engine included what is recognized as the first algorithm intended to be carried out by a machine, and she is therefore often regarded as the first computer programmer.
